Love Joys - Gimme Back (EP)

Gimme Back is a classic Bullwackies production, catching the Love Joys in full flight. The song is forlorn and imploring, the singing magnificent, over soulful organ, rocking horns and a crisp Delahaye drum programme, with a fine, deep dub. It Ain't Easy features veteran Blues Buster Philip James alongside Sonia Abel at the microphone. Stranger Get Up is the slower, keyboard cut: moody and essential. Yet another exclusive, Roots Vibes - which comes with a version - is from the sessions which produced the Reggae Vibes album. (info by Basischannel.com)

Triston Palma - Presenting

Backed by The Black Roots Players
Produced by Sugar Minott

I Am Ready
School Days
Jealous Girls

Jah Is Watching You
I Don't Want To Turn My Back
Everyday

His debut album. In showcase style. Triston had a long delay (years of school with jealous girls) before he could finally take his first shot at international fame. He just couldn't wait.

Debut albums in general of artists who manage to establish themselves are often fresh and uncompromised, with hindsight the best album, compared to following albums. Or they are a promise of what is to be coming later, a following album and more that is more mature.
Triston Palma's debut LP would be classified as a promise for later imo. It is a very enjoyable debut with a good variety of Black Roots riddims and satisfactory dubs. In 4 of the 6 songs he sings a nice melody great to me, but his singing gets better or more mature with the following albums Fancyness and Settle Down Girl, Touch Me, Take Me, etc..
This one highly recommended for your collection cause I'm a fan of the music. Thanks dbtb for your contribution.

Willie Williams - One Love

Smugg CD 2002, Muito Bom! compilation album of songs recorded in the 80's from the Armagideon Time man. Willie Williams is an excellent artist to start your reggae collection with. Not too prolific and he has made merely good albums (imo) so you don't get lost in too many titles and the chance you pick up a satisfactory album is close to 100%.

John Holt - Paragons & Friends

Studio One LP 198x
JA remixed versions of their 60's and 70's greatest hits. What's new? What is remixed?
Mainly it means here that the drums are a bit dubbed and that the sound quality is improved.
After listening a few tracks I thought some or all tracks might have been re-voiced too.
Cause when I was listening to "Wear You To The Ball" what do I hear John sing :

.....I'm gonna fuck you till it's broad daylight
Be in your best shape tonight

OK, actually that is what I heard, cause I probably just thought about it.
In reality he sings :

.....I'm gonna fun you till it's broad daylight
Be in your best shape tonight.....

Which is something totally different, and more what I expect from John Holt & The Paragons.
After relistening I clearly hear "fun". No fuck at all. That is strange. But for many years I thought that  Hugh Mundell was singing in "My Mind" :

...Thinking 'bout my girl who was lesbi and gone

But it appears to be : ....Thinking 'bout my girl who has left me and gone....

It always seemed logical to me that when someone has left you she is gone too, but somehow I managed to keep my own faith that she was a lesbi for years.

To some people it's not obvious how to get an album dl here on p-a-todareggae, and I have to say it is obvious that the dl links here are not obvious DOWNLOAD links.
Instead I make the links to dl on a word(s) under the album picture, which are GREEN coloured, or yellow, but not red. Those are links and to dl the album you click on the GREEN word(s). I do this this way cause I'm paranoid.

Prince Arjen - Shaky Morning

I got lots of these musical outings without singing. Only have to make a clip with it to give it some face.
I'd be delighted to voice some tracks cause I can make a nice riddim. But I don't understand music compose programs without nuts so I sometimes create something in Mozart, which sounds as dead as my granny. This one sounds so bad but a friend liked it when I played the track. Another friend of mine who is very shaky delivered the mobile phone videos used in this vid so the dog is not mine and I don't live there.

Earth & Stone Featuring Phillip Frazer - Back To Africa

Different LP 1978. Second album by Earth & Stone now singing backing harmony vocals with Phillip Frazer on lead vocal  instead of the Earth & Stone first album Kool Roots where the duo both sing lead vocals.
The two LP's have a total different feel and a total different vibe. On this album I prefer the music recorded at Duke Reid's and produced by Buster (Jimmy) Riley. On Kool Roots I prefer the singing, because Phillp Frazer is not one of the best singers such as Kool Roots are i.m.o, but he is in top-form here giving the best he has to offer orally compared to some later solo outings. Highly recommended!

The Pioneers - More Reggae For Lovers Vol.4

Country/soul  reggae to swing it easy with powerful harmonies and the expressive vocal delivery style, as I would describe this feel good music. Like Toots & The Maytals you love it or it does do you nothing due to often use of major chord progressions where you might strictly prefer the "rootsy" typical minor Am/Em or Am/Dm progressions. That's where artists like Jah Shaka are good at; just the vibes. With the Pioneers on the contrary you hear real songs and the vibes they have too.

Music in general consists of 3 things: melody, harmony and rhythm. Deejay and Dub music don't rely on melody and therefore can't be any really seriously good. That's what most people, especially the elder in my experience agree with. Without melody there is no obvious way to full structure(s) and expression and the music becomes to be eperienced as boring. They certainly don't skank around with the music per metre deejay dancehall thing, yak.
Good music stays in your mind and you unconsciously reproduce it by humming or whistling cause the music got you good. It's now inside you and beginning to dominate and destract your mathematical thinking.

Such music certainly is The Pioneers - More Reggae For Lovers. Whistling, singing and dancing to the groove all in a musical explosion of happiness bla bla bla you get the point. So one up for The Pioneers and one for the road which makes it two so make it a double please. Next time getting back to you with just the vibes! (update 15-11-09 reason text cancelled)

Ernest Ranglin - Ranglin Roots

Recorded at Aquarius
Arranged by Ernest Ranglin
Mixed by Stephen Stanley & Boris Gardiner

The reggae of Ernest Ranglin, a very accomplished virtuoso guitarist, is very Miami USA influenced, which means that his sound is not purely Jamaican, but more with an easy-listening American feel. Which makes his music commercially more tasty for a wider audience, and also richer in instrumentation and arrangements.
This "Ranglin Roots" is a classic and it's a perfect showcase of Mr Ranglin's guitar playing talent.
A highly recommended blend of reggae, soul, jazz, nyahbinghi, etc.. to start or add to your instrumental reggae collection. Enjoy!

What a lively cover art photo reflecting the music so well. The singer with his balls squeezed tight debut album this is and it's very short in length, only 25 min. However nothing but good vibes in the dance when spinning these tracks, full of irieness and crafty musicianship. So come again selector, with the one & only unique Madoo!

Winston Riley - Meditation Dub Vol 1

Techniques LP 197x produced by Winston Riley.
All selections strictly dub.
Tracks of this Meditation Dub (Vol 1) were later reissued by the Pressure Sounds record label on Techniques In Dub.
Most recognizable here is a cut of Stalag, a riddim versioned more than a 1000 times by several artists in reggae and raggamuffin.
The other tracks are roots all the way and in some cases feature some very distinctive organ and flute melodies.
There is also a follow-up to this album, called Meditation Dub Vol 2.  In contrary to Vol 1 the latter volume is packed with dancehall dub cuts. This rootsy Vol 1 I prefer.

V.A. - Reckless Roots Rockers

Wackies LP 1977/CD 2006
Recorded at King Tubby's (Kingston, JA)
& Sounds Unlimited (New York, USA)
Producer : Bullwackie
Reckless Roots Rockers is a high quality dub set originally released in 1977 with Jah Upton and Prince Douglas joining Lloyd Barnes at the mixing desk. Most of the tracks were laid down at King Tubby’s studio in JA by the Soul Syndicate from 1974 to 1975 before Lloyd 'Bullwackie' Barnes moved to New York.

There are upbeat tracks like 'Dub Full Of Girls' ‘Roots Rockers’ and ‘City Line.’ ‘Underworld’ goes deeper with a beat that feels like a second heartbeat. ‘Explosure’ is quintessential ’70s era dub.
‘Chin Chow’ features the roots stylings of Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith on guitar. There is one vocal track, the super rare righteous ‘Prepare Jah Man’ voiced by Don Carlos.

Sly & Robbie - Hot Dub

Keytone LP 1984. Recorded at Aquarius (Kingston JA) & Electric Lady (New York USA). Mixed at Wisseloord Studios (Holland), Produced by Henny Vrienten, who was the leader of the unsurpassed ultimate Dutch reggae band  Doe Maar.
Chris Hinze, the Dutch flute player also blows on Hot Dub. It would be great to see this album reissued so it would be available again, for this is excellent adventurous dub to chill on. It only could have been better if it had more raw JA dub style in the mix. But I consider this album as a unique Jamaican / Dutch crossover project, which it is, and don't compare it with the puristic raw JA releases of Sly & Robbie. Enjoy....

Carlton Barrett & Family Man - The Sound Of Macka Dub Vol. 1

Got the Clocktower LP 197x re-release simply called
Macka Dub on the label imprint.

On this album you can hear a group of elder experienced musicians like the Barrett brothers themselves, The Mighty Sparrow (on drums too), Glen Adams on keyboards. They created some of the finest pure no-nonsense dub reggae. Effectively and inuberantly (who knows what that word means?) mixed by Phillip Smart & produced by Brad Osbourne, the producer with his as I would describe it dark wooden sound.
And the label Clocktower, !!!!!, the first Clocktower LP I bought (Black Board jungle Dub I guess) was a true experience for me. What a heavy warm sound it had and the artwork, the green or fire coloured label with the Big Ben on it. That was something really special and it all made sense. Like so many other wicked reggae record labels too, like f.e. the imprint and artwork from Natty Dread On the North Coast album with the mosquito label imprint (Jungle Beat). That kind of album and label art is so genuine and rootsy that I cherish it longtime.
The album presented here is a repress and the old Big Ben imprint is replaced by simple black on white letters. Seems to be bootlegged too these reissues but as long as the sound is OK and the price too it's good that good records like this get reissued anyhow.

D Locks is a reggae singer. You can hear him also sing "Mount Zion Here We Come" in my vid of last week. He is not in this video cause I haven't seen him for a long time, but I still had this song on a tape from four years ago. Plan is to add a vid with "Jam It" that shows both D Locks & me recording in the studio and things, so hopefully in the future that will work out, if we meet again.
